Shaping the Future of Safe AI in Finance: Theta Lake’s Journey with the FCA AI Lab

Artificial intelligence is rewriting how the financial services industry operates. As AI adoption accelerates, so does the critical need for AI that is safe, responsible and well governed. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) recently emphasized this point, explaining that by engaging openly, “stakeholders can help shape what safe and responsible AI adoption looks like in UK financial services”. Theta Lake is proud to be part of that engagement.

At Theta Lake, we know that true innovation cannot happen in a regulatory vacuum. Since day one we have prioritised open, proactive engagement with regulators—sharing our technical expertise, participating in policy development, and staying tightly aligned with evolving regulatory priorities.

Our Director of Regulatory Intelligence, Stacey English—herself a former regulator and industry practitioner—shares an inside look at our recent engagement with the FCA’s AI Lab ecosystem.

1. The FCA AI Spotlight: Demonstrating ‘What Good Looks Like’

Developed as part of the broader FCA AI Lab, the AI Spotlight provides a valuable repository of practical AI solutions in financial services. It provides firms with an interactive way to explore real-world AI solutions—without the FCA endorsing any specific solution—and supports the FCA’s commitment to enable safe and responsible AI adoption in UK financial services. When the FCA’s Chief Data, Information and Intelligence Officer, Jessica Rusu, unveiled the AI Spotlight digital repository, she framed it as a response to a frequent industry question: “What does good look like?”.

Theta Lake was incredibly proud to be selected for the Compliance and Automation theme.  This showcases innovative AI solutions that can drive positive change in financial services: enhance operational efficiency, streamline compliance and help firms innovate while managing regulatory responsibilities more effectively. Firms can explore the AI Spotlight repository here.

2. The AI Supercharged Academy

Our Director of Regulatory Intelligence, Stacey English was delighted to be selected for the FCA’s AI Supercharged Academy – an invitation-only programme, limited to a select group of founders and innovators who have previously engaged with the AI Lab’s initiatives. The Academy is part of the wider AI Lab, and the overarching aim is to support the safe and responsible use of AI in UK financial markets, helping drive innovation, competitiveness, and growth across the sector. Built jointly by the FCA and Centre for Finance, Technology and Entrepreneurship (CFTE) it helps innovators position businesses that are fast, credible, and AI-native.

The programme commenced with an intensive in-person summit, providing a full-day immersion into the ecosystem alongside financial institutions, the FCA, and industry experts. Key highlights included exploring the FCA Perspective on Responsible Innovation, with direct insights from those leading AI initiatives at the regulator, and a session on How Banks Think featuring senior banking executives. This was followed by ten weeks of practical capability building including weekly interactive sessions with experts on a comprehensive curriculum covering AI, regulation, trust, and more.

This initiative supports the FCA’s competition objective by engaging a broad range of innovators and contributing to a more dynamic financial services sector.  The programme also provides the FCA with insight into emerging trends and practical developments shaping the future of AI in finance.

3. The AI Innovation Showcase & The AI in Finance Observatory

The AI Supercharged Academy culminated in a high-profile, invitation-only event jointly hosted in London by the FCA and the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). The event convened senior regulators, global innovators, financial institutions, academics, and international policy stakeholders.  We were proud to be selected to showcase Theta Lake in the AI Innovation Showcase which featured eight global innovators – four from the MAS Pathfinder cohort and four from the FCA AI Spotlight.  Each had been chosen to demonstrate advanced, real‑world AI solutions shaping the future of financial services.

Stacey English and Dan Nadir, Theta Lake’s Chief Product Officer took to the stage to address three insights:

  • The Problem: The compliance, security and governance risks hidden within unmonitored digital communications and AI interactions.
  • The Solution: How Theta Lake uses advanced, and ISO 42001 certified trustworthy AI to detect risks within digital communications and complex AI interactions (“aiComms”).
  • The Impact: How AI and communications oversight and governance protects firms, consumers, satisfies regulators, and drives operational efficiencies.

The Inaugural Case Study for the AI in Finance Observatory

One of Theta Lake’s real-world compliance use cases for meeting MiFID II requirements was selected to feature as the live demonstration during the formal launch of the AI in Finance Observatory,

As part of the collaboration between the FCA and CFTE, the AI in Finance Observatory initiative brings together insights and real-world AI use cases from across the FCA AI Lab ecosystem to support structured understanding of how AI is being applied in financial services. Because our platform served as the inaugural demonstration, Theta Lake became the very first test case for the Observatory’s new AI taxonomy framework.

What’s Next: A Commitment to Continuing Engagement

Now that the formal AI Supercharged Academy cohort has concluded, our team becomes part of the official AI Lab alumni network where we will continue to collaborate and share insights and expertise as part of AI Lab initiatives. We also continue to enhance our presence in both the FCA’s AI Spotlight and the AI in Finance Observatory, maintaining our solution showcase and real-world use cases to reflect Theta Lake’s expanding AI capabilities for digital and AI communications governance in financial services.

By staying at the absolute center of global regulatory dialogues, we ensure that as the compliance challenges for AI and digital communications continue to shift, we can help financial institutions and the broader financial ecosystem interpret, adapt to, and meet those expectations with complete confidence.
